"During a weekend design workshop for the Aliso Village Revitalization,
hundreds of residents were bussed to gather at the Los Angeles Convention
Center. They were, however, focused primarily on Section 8 Housing Voucher
Program, the uncertainty of having a place to live, and/or whether or not
they would return to the new Aliso Village. There was great tension in the
air and the atmosphere was quite hostile. The last thing these residents cared
about was the design and master planning of the community from which they
were being relocated. Adding to that tension was the fact that visitors from
the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in Washington, D.C.
were there as part of the HOPE VI funding evaluation process, making the local
Housing Authority very nervous. Arellano Associates was able to get the
residents to set aside their very valid concerns and discuss planning issues
with our designers. This was quite an accomplishment and as a result the
HUD officials were very impressed, so much so that Aliso Village did get the
HOPE VI funding and now we have the new Aliso Village in Boyle Heights, now
called Pueblo del Sol."
